The Sovereignty of God

These days remind us how quickly stability can feel uncertain. What appears solid can tremble in a moment, and what felt distant can suddenly press close. Yet Scripture refuses to let us interpret the world by what we see alone. “Our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases” (Psalm 115:3). The throne is not shaken when nations rage (Psalm 2:1–4). The Lord is not reacting to unfolding events or adjusting His purposes under pressure. He “removes kings and establishes kings” (Daniel 2:21), and “works all things according to the counsel of His will” (Ephesians 1:11). The storm is real, but it is not sovereign.

And we know the character of this rule because we have seen it most clearly at the cross. What appeared to be chaos and the triumph of evil was, in truth, “delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God” (Acts 2:23). The darkest hour in history unfolded under His wise and holy hand for the salvation of His people. If He governed that day for the brightest good, then we may trust Him in this one. Christ is not pacing in heaven. He is seated at the right hand of God (Romans 8:34), reigning until all His enemies are placed under His feet (1 Corinthians 15:25), and He “always lives to make intercession” for His people (Hebrews 7:25). His sovereignty is not cold force, but purposeful love. The King who rules the nations also keeps His church, and not one purpose of His can fail (Job 42:2).
